TWO WEEK NATURALIST/BIRDWATCHING TOUR TO CENTRAL/WEST CUBA
This amazing tour has been changed slightly to allow you to maximize your birdwatching vacation. You will spend time in four of Cuba’s best birding areas plus have a chance to discover Cuba’s colourful history and enjoy the vibrant city of Havana. You will also have a bit of beach time and time to acquaint yourself with the friendliness of Cuban the people.  As with all my tours, I only take a maximum of 14 and it is done on a first come basis so I would suggest, if you are interested, to contact me at your earliest convenience to assure a spot on the tour.  The group of 2006  spotted over 107 different bird species (listed in the attachment) with a number of endemics, including the bee hummingbird, world's smallest.  This years group added to that list and I hope to have those listed sometime in the near future.  You are also provided with a birding specialist for each area you visit and they are well trained in the areas you will be going to.
Look forward to having you along.

TOUR DATE: FEBRUARY 8 - 22, 2009

Itinerary

Day 1- Arrive in Havana and transfer to a 4* Occidental Miramar hotel.   Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 2- Breakfast and tour of this incredible city with a population of approximately two and a half million people. Lunch is not included, but old Havana has many wonderful restaurants to serve you. Return to the hotel in the afternoon to enjoy the facilities or explore the city on your own. Dinner at the hotel with evening entertainment, such as the famous Tropicana show, optional.

Day 3- Breakfast and transfer to the town of Vinales in the province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba’s famous tobacco growing region.  This magote (pin cushion hills) scaped area is breathtaking and offers some great birding locations in the national parks.  Accommodation will be at One of the three 3* hotels and you have dinner at the hotel.  Lunch will be at a local restaurant set out in one of the natural areas.

Day 4- Breakfast (if an early departure is requested breakfast will be a sandwich and juice prepared to take with you) and transfer to one of the national park areas.  You will have a local birding specialist with you for the hike and he/she will be familiar will all the birds in this area.  Most people are interested in the endemics.  Return to Vinales for lunch.  Dinner is not included this night so you will have an option of eating at the hotel restaurant or eating at a private house, which is a great experience, reasonably priced and great food.

Day 5- Breakfast and transfer to another hiking location in the valley.  You should have the same guide and again he will help you locate any of the endemics in this area.
After the hike you will have time for lunch which is not included this day, before transferring to the Soroa/Las Terrazas region.  Accommodations will be at either hotel La Moka or hotel Soroa.  Both are located in magnificent, natural areas.  Dinner will be at the hotel.

Candelaria

Day 6- Breakfast and hike in this area with another local specialist.  You will be at a higher elevation than in Vinales with different vegetation so you will be seeing some different varieties of birds.  You will have both lunch and dinner at the hotel.  The afternoon is an opportunity to wander around on your own and take in some of the natural wonders.

Day 7- Breakfast and transfer to Playa Giron in the Bay of Pigs/Zapata swamp area.  You will be staying at hotel Playa Giron which is on a beach and beside a small museum dedicated to the Bay of Pigs battle.  This is an all inclusive hotel which means all you meals and beverages are included.  You should arrive here in time for lunch.

Day 8-Breakfast and transfer to one of the hiking areas with your local birding specialist.  Zapata swamp is where you will likely see the bee humming bird as well as a number of other Cuban endemics.  Return to the hotel for a free afternoon.  A short distance fro the hotel is a magnificent area for snorkeling in tidal pools full of tropical fish species or visit the museum.

Day 9- Breakfast and transfer to another area with your local guide.

Screech-owl

Day 10- Breakfast and transfer to the botanical garden (one of the most important in the world) located outside Cienfuegos.  Lunch will be in Cienfuegos before continuing on to the heritage town of Trinidad.  You will be taken on a short tour of this fascinating town before heading up into the Escambray mountains to Topes de Collantes.  Accommodation and dinner will be at hotel Los Helechos.

Day 11- Breakfast and hike to the Codina valley directly from the hotel with bird specialist.  This hike is beautiful, but average in difficulty with lots of ups and downs.  Good shoes recommended.  We will arrive at the Codina valley and have lunch.    Guided eco hike in the valley after lunch and transfer back by truck.  Dinner at the hotel.

Day12- Breakfast and bird watching hike to another location in the Topes area with lunch provided at another location. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 13- Breakfast and transfer to Havana with accommodation and dinner at hotel Occidental Miramar where you began the tour.  Lunch not included.
