I first visited
Cuba in 1992, at the beginning of the "special period" and
a time of harsh economic conditions. The general population
was not allowed to spend US dollars, the emerging currency,
and as dollar stores were becoming the only place where a consistency
of goods were available it was a very difficult period. At
that time tourism was just starting to emerge as a potential
for bringing this beautiful island some financial security.
Hotels were being built to attract tourists to the magnificent
beaches which surround the island, and president Fidel Castro
began making changes to allow for a loosening on government
restraints and making it possible for Cuban citizens to have
small private businesses. In 1992 all tourism was flown to
the island to major centres and bussed to the mostly all inclusive
hotels and after a week or two flown home. Recognizing the opportunity
to do group tourism to discover this magnificent island and its
wonderful people I began researching the possiblities at a time
when only a few recognized the potential for group tours. Now,
after numerous trips to Cuba and most of those trips as the tour
leader on all the various tour programs I offer, I consider my
tours to represent the best quality, best organized and most
diverse. I pride myself and the programs I offer by having many
repeat customers whom have become friends. Discovering Cuba has
been an enriching experience for me and to share it with others
is my enjoyment and to offer the best tour programs is my goal.
