CYCLE TOUR – EASTERN CUBA

DATE OF TOUR  Cancelled for 2023 – will resume 2024.

Both cycle tours I offer have become very popular with growing interest among cyclists. They both take you to the most rural and beautiful areas of Cuba while allowing time to discover the culture, learn about the history and enjoy some cities as well as time to relax on a few of Cuba’s magnificent beaches. Although I have listed distances for each day, we will have a bus with a trailer to carry the bikes should you wish to climb aboard if you get tired or the weather is too hot for you. The bus will also carry all luggage and will stop at designated distances for you to replenish water bottles or have a snack (bring your own energy bars, etc.)

You will discover, if you have been to other web sites offering cycle tours to Cuba, that Cuba1tours is of the highest quality and most competitive price.  If you are thinking of a cycle tour to Cuba I hope that you will consider cuba1tours.

The minimum number for me to confirm the tour is 8 and the maximum number of cyclists I take on this tour is 15 and it is on a first come basis –– EARLY BOOKING IS IMPORTANT. Hope to have you along.

Compare the quality and the price to other companies offering similar tours…Cuba1tours is best in both.  All our accommodations are in hotels with 3 to 4+ star ratings.

Please note meals included:

  • B – breakfast
  • L – lunch
  • D – dinner
  • AI – All Inclusive

DAY 2 – Breakfast and cycle to the port town of Gibara (approx 40 kms).  Lunch and return to Holguin by bus.  City tour in the afternoon with dinner at the hotel. (B/L/D)

DAY 3 – Breakfast and cycle directly from the hotel.  We will cycle along fairly quiet paved roads through small villages with our riding destination the town of Cueto (approx. 60 kms) This is where we have our box lunch, load bikes onto the trailer and transfer by bus to the island of Cayo Saetia, an exotic animal reserve, where we will spend the night. This is a quiet island with one small villa and beaches within a short walking distance. Dinner will be at the villa. (B/L/D)

DAY 4 –Breakfast and transfer to the main highway to begin cycling. Continue along undulating/hilly roads through some small towns and beautiful countryside with light traffic to Los Indios (Approx. 61 kms) or Moa (84 kms).  We will board the bus at this point and drive to Cuba’s oldest city, Baracoa.  Box lunch is included.  We will stay at one of the main hotels.  Dinner at the hotel.  (B/L/D)

DAY 5 – Breakfast and cycle to a small fishing village at the mouth of the Yumuri river. This is a beautiful ride, up and down small hills, past small villages and magnificent vegetation. The road is paved, with little traffic.  Dinner will be at Finca (farm) Duaba. (Approx. 60 kms return) (B/D)

DAY 6 – Breakfast and cycle from Baracoa over the Farola Viaduct, which climbs steeply to an elevation of 800 metres, with magnificent views and lush vegetation.   You will be cycling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean (approx. 60 kms).  We will prearrange a fresh seafood lunch which will cost around fifteen dollars per person….the lunch is always incredible, and a great place to take a swim in the Caribbean.  We then pack our bikes on the bus and head to the city of Guantanamo with accommodation and dinner at Hotel Guantanamo.  (B/D)

DAY 7 – Breakfast and cycle to the city of Santiago de Cuba (approx. 85 kms).  These paved roads take you through more of the Cuban countryside with sugar cane fields, mountains in the distance, and not much traffic until you get close to the towns and city of Santiago. Box Lunch.  Accommodation and dinner a Melia Santiago hotel or similar.  (B/L/D)

DAY 8 – Breakfast and bus/walking tour of the most important parts of Santiago, one of the largest and most important cities in Cuba.  We will finish the tour in the central park, Cespedes, where you can enter the  Grand hotel overlooking the park and city.  Lunch NOT included.  Dinner at hotel.  (B/D)

DAY 9 – Breakfast and transfer bikes to the outskirts of the city and begin biking along the magnificent coastal highway with little traffic.  Our destination is Sierra Mar all inclusive resort.  (approx 70 kms)

DAY 10 – Breakfast and begin cycling right from the resort.  This road is spectacular as it clings to the edge of the Sierra Maestra mountains to the north and the gorgeous Caribbean to the south.  We will ride until the good pavement ends and then load the bikes on the trailer and transfer to another all-inclusive resort…Marea del Portillo. (approx 60 – 70 kms)

DAY 11 – Breakfast and transfer the bikes over some bad road to the top of a 3 + Km hill and begin biking towards Manzanillo (approx 75 kms).  Accommodation and dinner at hotel Guacanayabo in Manzanillo. (B/D)

DAY 13 – Breakfast and transfer bikes to the city of Holguin.  Off load bikes and cycle from Holguin to the all-inclusive resort, Playa Costa Verde where you will spend your final two nights. (approx 50 kms) (B/AI)

DAY 14 – Free day and if you want more cycling, this is a good area with paved roads and nice scenery.

DAY 15 – Transfer to Holguin airport for your return flight.

Note that all distances mentioned at the end of each day are approximate cycling distances, and you are free to do as much or as little as you wish. The bus will be available for you to board if you become tired.

Hi Tom,

You don’t even have to ask if I enjoyed the trip. I told you already. I loved every minute, well except for the tar but who could have known about that. I found myself having periods of absolute joy as I rode alone on the quiet roads…just pedal and breathe…how perfectly simple.
The food was often fantastic, who can forget The Cave or even the box lunch with the best avocado ever.
My bike arrived safely and is now being cleaned and tuned up at my local bike shop so all is well.I really hope you carry on with your tours. I have put the western Cuba trip on my bucket list. I was at the CCCTS Christmas lunch today raving about my trip. At least two people wrote down your web address.
Have a lovely Christmas. Stay well.

Tom –

As usual, u did a masterful job of creating a wonderful cycling trip in Cuba … the distances were great, accommodations as fine as usual, Erick as terrific as usual, we loved the lunch @ the Cuban home, too.
Your jokes r a definite 🎆💥😉HIGHLIGHT!!!
We’re looking forward to watching Eric’s CD when we get home … maybe showing it to some friends.
In a year’s time, if u r doing Cuba West, b sure to let us know!

Hi Tom,

I thought the tour was amazing!
Very well organized. I especially loved the way that you, Eric and Angel interacted with each other. I loved the daily jokes! Cuba is a very interesting country. The light fixtures in one of our hotels were almost exactly the same as the retro fixture that we have in our bathroom. It is a bit of a challenge for us Canadians when everything does not work perfectly, but hey, that is Cuba! Every day had something new.
This trip was inspirational to me as I now realize that I could do a cycling trip on my own if I had to. The trip strengthened my cycling abilities. Also, I met a new friend. Bonnie and I are hoping to do a kayaking tour in Kyuquot Sound this summer!
Barrie enjoyed the group. He had some issues with some of the other stuff, but I am just really happy that he came. Thanks for the very nice picture.
I think that it is likely that I will try to do the West-Central tour as well.
See you around in the village!
Take care,

Sandra

Hi Tom:  This is so very kind of you to send me the pictures…thank you! It was a great tour and much appreciated by all, especially with Eric and Angel, your amazing duo cohorts:) Keep up the good work and have a drink for me over the Xmas holidays (with “holiday” being the operative word – you deserve it:),

Bonnie

Just got home from my fourth bike trip to Cuba with Tom Robertson. A very relaxing well taken care of way to see Cuba. The biking was great, you can ride as much or as little as you want because the support bus is there throughout the day. Food and accommodation were great, people are very friendly and the rum is amazing.

I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who is a biking person.
